Do I need a private utility locate before I dig?
The 811 call before you dig system is great but it only mandates that public utilities get marked. Even if you or your contractor doing the work has called 811 the odds are still very strong that you may have unmarked private utilities present in your dig site.
This is because the 811 system makes the major utility providers come out and ensure their lines are marked. The service may be free to you and the contractors but it still costs them money. Due to this they have made very clear delineations about where their responsibility to mark any given utility ends and when the burden falls upon you the contractor or the homeowner. Most cities and municipalities have decided that after the water stop valve at the curb the rest of the water line to your house or business is private, this goes for sewer too and if you have a septic system and a well those didn’t get marked by 811 either. You might see the powerline coming off the pole in the backyard and going to your house and the meter. But what about the lights in the detached garage? Where does that power come from. The same goes for the gas line once that line from the main out by the road touches the meter on your house it is private. Do you have a shop with a heater or backyard gas barbeque grill or an inground pool with a heater? Then you need a private utility locator to mark these unseen lines before you dig.
